Fifth edition expands into Atlantic Canada

TORONTO, Ont. (May 9, 2023)- ByBlacks Restaurant Week, which is fast approaching next week, May 15-21, 2023 continues to expand nationally with Black-owned Canadian restaurants offering prix fixe menus for delicious African, Caribbean and fusion cuisines.

“Black Opportunity Fund is pleased to support Black Restaurant Week. This partnership builds on our ongoing commitment to supporting Black entrepreneurs across Canada through funding and capacity-building initiatives,” says Craig Wellington, Executive Director of the Black Opportunity Fund

For the first time there are participants from the Atlantic (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.)

“The sun is finally shining after a long, cold winter and we’re thrilled to invite our communities to these restaurants,” says ByBlacks.com Co-Founder, Roger Dundas. “We can’t wait for Canadians from coast to coast to taste the flavours of Africa, the Caribbean and more. There was a time when tacos and sushi weren’t as popular as they are now. Now it’s time for Black food to get to that level too!”

Participating establishments are offering discounts ranging between 10-25% off regular pricing.

ByBlacks Restaurant Week is proud to feature cuisine from many different Black communities. Yes, you can get jerk chicken, but it’s so much more than that. This is gastronomy that much of the Canadian public may not know about yet, but will quickly become a new family favourite.

Media Sponsors include Canada Takeout, Caribbean Vibrations TV, Cuisine Noir, FEVA TV, Jump Podcast, The Caribbean Camera, and The Morning Vibe.

With so many food service businesses suffering the effects of staff shortages and the rise in food costs, just keeping the lights on can be about all small business owners can do. With Restaurant Week, the people who are the backbone of our local economies get their chance to shine.

Restaurant Week participants can be found in over 40 restaurants in British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.

ByBlacks Restaurant Week is supported by Canadian membership organizations; Afro Canadian Business Network, Black Business Association of British Columbia, Black Business and Professional Association, Black Business Initiative, Black Opportunity Fund, Discover Halifax, and the Federation of African Canadian Economics.

About the Black Opportunity Fund

Black Opportunity Fund (BOF) is a community-led registered Canadian Charitable organization, that supports a  prosperous, healthy and thriving Black Canada by challenging anti-Black racism in two ways. First, we respond to long standing underinvestment in Black communities.  We do this by delivering sustainable and needs-informed capital streams, managed by Black people for the benefit of  Black communities, which disrupt  ineffective and disempowering contemporary funding practices. Second, we work nationally to strengthen collective actions by Black organizations and leaders, helping them to create new and more impactful ways to support and advocate for our community.
